The retarder uses your transmission to slow the truck down, hence the whirling sound you hear with the retarder engaged. The CC will use the retarder, regardless. The option you see about "Automatic Retarder", as I said above, is only about having it activate when you use the brakes. The only way CC won't use the retarder is if the transmission doesn't have one. And you can accelerate beyond the set speed. Hitting the accelerator does not disengage the CC.
